London

May 27, 1850

The wind had finally settled down about mid-morning after keeping Wren awake most of the night with howling and the flinging of small pieces of debris against the windows of the tiny flat above the tavern.

Today she would venture outside after having kept to her quarters for most of two weeks except for forays downstairs to check on the staff, receive supplies and for meals and a bit of company.

She’d felt a bone-weary, soul-numbing fatigue and had waited it out–just a cycle such as occurs in the natural world. There were some moments when she’d wondered if she’d been poisoned, but she wasn’t important enough for that. She’d also considered whether she’d acquired the affliction that had been spreading around London for several years now, but the familiarity of her extreme languor and irritability called for dismissal of that possibility.

It was more than simple melancholy; she’d paced the floors, slept a lot, gazed out the windows and avoided her scrying ball and cards.

Today would be the day to coax and push herself back out into the bustling city even though she didn’t feel quite ready–in fact, she had a sinking feeling of dismay in her solar plexus.

Without a mental list of things to do or any plan at all really, she cautiously opened the tavern door and stepped out into the street. The air was damp and sooty; she was drawn immediately to the gentle and patient eyes of a horse attached to a nearby carriage. The driver was in the tavern having a quick pint; Wren whispered in the horse’s ear and scratched around his head–a perfect beginning to re-entry into the world.

PandamoniumBy now almost everyone knows about the new TOS from Linden Labs. I actually read some of it, since the last time there was a change I was only about three months old, wasn’t sure if I was going to stay and it hadn’t crossed my mind that I’d ever be blogging about SL.

Some of it was quite useful, leading me to Wiki pages about use of photographs and such, things I’ve been wondering about lately. I learned about looking at covenants to see if photography is allowed on a sim. It seems like there are so many mistakes a well-meaning person can make by blundering in and exploring things. I tend to err on the side of caution and it does hamper my fun and creativity.

I’ve noticed that many of the bloggers make a point of indicating that Second Life is trademarked and all that legal sort of stuff. What I do is very informal and I’ve never networked with SL blogger support groups; I think I’m all right though.Pandamonium homeAnyway once I got past that–earlier I’d realized my spring allergies would keep me from working efficiently–I distracted myself with moving home in my 1850’s London rp sim–the rp that’s going well. I am a witch and have recently begun managing the tavern in the top photo.

I had 25 land impact allowed and I used 23; I think I did very well. I bought three new items and otherwise used what I had. The fortune teller table above is by Mystique and is a 7 land impact. It has a candle, the two chairs, tablecloth and props of a crystal ball and tarot cards. The lovely ones I already had were too high in land impact. The Teal Persian rug came from the Fantasy Faire build that The Looking Glass had. It was the shop with the Asian furnishings–I liked almost everything in there.

The oval portrait of the Victorian couple is new as well. It is a 3 land impact but is so lovely it’s worth it. It came from Spargel and Shine–I love Tess Spargel’s homes–and that might be why “shine and sparkle” was going through my feverish head yesterday.

My character is illiterate but in the window is her inscribed copy of “Vampyre No More” that she received from an enjoyable IC reading and book signing.  pandamonium home2The botanical prints on the wall are 1 prim each and I’ve used them in almost every place I’ve lived. The vanity is by [DDD] and I’ve had it a long time. It’s an amazing 2 prims and is actually medieval/fantasy but works for Victorian rp. It has 3 animations and one sit. The vase is from POST, one of my favorite shops, land impact 3. The bed is something I looked for on the marketplace; land impact 4. It was made by a Myfanwy McMahon and is meant for realistically scaled avatars; it can be modified but that may increase the land impact.

The Victorian beds I had in inventory were either high prim or low prim ones made for giants. I’m not at all knowledgeable or patient with modifying things. The sizes of everything here seem consistent with each other; my avatar actually fits the bed although it might not seem so in the photo.

So I’m feeling rather accomplished right now and know that when I’m feeling better I’ll be very efficient at my first world work. Here’s a final shot of the sim, using region settings and no post processing on my part.

Maybe the New CHUI Isn’t So Bad

Book reading and signing for "Vampyre No More"

Book reading and signing for “Vampyre No More”

“Vampyre No More”. Pearl laughs!

The new communications hub for the Second Life Viewer was released less than a week ago and I was a little upset at yet another change to deal with. My main concern was being overwhelmed during roleplay. Things are amping up in my real life, I’m not getting enough sleep, I feel impatient with the rate of social and evolutionary change and the part of my brain that shifts from the cosmic into “mouselook” to deal with changes in how stuff works was not happy.

I’m excited to be involved in a new roleplay sim, Pandemonium, and I’ve had an opportunity to play using the CHUI about four times. Last night I attended an Aristocrat’s Ball there and maybe eleven other people were in attendance at one point. Only once have I posted a private IM into the In-Character local chat and it wasn’t too bad. I do get distracted when too many conversations are going on for me but it was like that before. I’ve usually had difficulty in keeping up.

freaks_001

Last week I had my first pro photoshoot for my profile and several picks.  The photographer was Peep Sideshow (not to be confused with the Victorian Freak Show roleplay photo above) and the whole experience went very well; I got the finished photos the day before the CHUI was released and I was relieved about the timing; I’ve since calmed down. I’m using my profile photo as my new Gravitar and I really like it.     tea room_002The new roleplay has been rich with writing and story so far and the excellent  roleplayers have been including me to an appropriate degree, staying out of my IM box, not being nosy and even the bad guys are witty and amusing. So far.

I’ve also moved into a skybox. All the other places I’ve lived in have been roleplay homes in different time periods–Medieval/Fantasy, Victorian or Cyber-Grunge. I’ve made time to read blogs and have a growing list going of places I want to visit when I’m less busy. I’ve also read many of the pet peeve meme posts and have since turned off my shoe sound. I don’t miss it, although I felt comforted by it when I could hear the sound as I was walking around inworld. No one ever complained to me about it although I did see shoe clicking mentioned in profiles that were otherwise so pissy and whiney about so many things that I didn’t care.

This blog was born out of the frustration and downtime of my Second Life not going  so well and it isn’t my main priority. Engagement with others is a priority for me, wherever that’s happening, although I do want a record of my Second Life. I have drafts with photos; posts will be published when I find time to write, in a lag-like way.

Lately I haven’t been examining and philosophizing my Second Life so closely; I feel much more clear about my focus there as I do in my first life and that’s wonderful. I feel like I’ve moved to a different level and am not in a review cycle right now; instead I’m in a creating/exploring part of the cycle. It all works better when I don’t struggle with where I’m at or compare it to where others are.

Life is good.

Tea and Scones with the Ladies

The annual hula competition is over. The last three nights I watched it from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. my time on the live stream, last night while talking on the phone  with a friend who lives in Hilo and was watching it too.

I haven’t had much sleep lately. Was I ready to get back to important, first life today? No. I had tea in 1850’s London instead.

What Would It Take Not to Change Outfits So Often?

LNL_7

The different activities I participate in require frequent outfit changes, which is all right when I actually get to do something but too often sims have nothing going on at the time to make it worth my while. I greatly prefer not to enter a rp sim dressed inappropriately and certainly don’t want to IM people or groups asking if anyone’s there.

Tending to think there’s a solution for everything or at least a perception to accept and live at peace with circumstances, I wondered how I might make this costume change thing easier.LNL_6

A few weeks ago I attended an event where I met London Junkers and Lizzie Gudkov. Lizzie left to attend another party; London and I danced and chatted. When I mentioned that I enjoy Victorian roleplay, I was offered an outfit from their product line at LnL Square. It was only later that I learned more of the accomplishments and talents of these partners and by then I already felt comfortable instead of intimidated.LNL_5

When I visited LnL Square, I took photos of some of the places to hang out, which I’ll post soon. I looked at all the outfits and chose one of many that seemed multi-purpose to me. The above photos were taken at New Gomorrah, with the time being in 2080. In the Shadowrun book I’m reading, there’s mention of the runners wearing dusters. I dress differently when I’m in the Tea and Bath House I manage of course, but this outfit works well for me especially now that my character is becoming more of a bad-ass. 🙂 LNL_4

Then I walked around one of my Victorian roleplay sims and it worked there as well. This particular unisex outfit is LnL 0_91. They’re all numbered and all the same price. This one has a hat, scarf, collar, belt, cane and coat bottom which are all resizable. I tend to leave the accessories off as I also wear this other places inworld. I get more playtime and have less messing with appearance.LNL_2

These photos are in low light, I know. I quite fit in, walking around a dangerous area alone at night.LNL_1This is one of the rare times I ventured into the Vampire hangout. (No one else was around.)

It was fascinating to me to hear about how LnL Square began. It sounded to me like it was an organic process that kept including the next logical step and that it has sustainability, which is a subject dear to me.

It’s wonderful to have vision, to dream big and to bring amazing creations into any reality but I become weary when I feel there’s too much struggle and support needed from me to keep someone else’s dream going. I have my own agendas that need attending. This dynamic is something I’m all too aware of in my first life and I don’t care for it in Second Life.

I really like the new Vintage clothes and also the outfits I got at the Buddy Walk event which I’ve blogged about in the last few months. This outfit is very versatile  for when I log on at odd times and need to check out several places before I find something going on to engage with.

Goatswood_001 Goatswood is a kind of Gothic, Victorian roleplay sim that I visited recently. I love the build but don’t recall many of the details because I understood I wouldn’t have time to play there for a while. I got a 3 day observers pass but only spent an hour or so looking around. It was encouraging that I “overheard” roleplayers there who were quite good.Goatswood_004 There’s a backstory that ought to be read if one is to play well, and something–a meter or HUD–that needs to be purchased and learned as well. I’m keeping this place in mind if the other things I like to do in SL go away.

Goatswood_005

There were interesting areas and it looked like all the rentals were full, which is a good sign.Goatswood_006

I wandered around looking and listening and behaved appropriately as an observer so as not to disturb the ongoing conversations, which didn’t seem to violent or hostile.Goatswood_008This is the landing area with all sorts of information. I also liked that those in charge seem to be attending to and involved in the sim. There are shops nearby which is convenient for those of us who like to buy needed inventory inworld.

As usual, I didn’t do anything with the photos after taking them but I like the way they turned out.

Playing for Queen Victoria_001

March 7, 1893

Pearl played for the Queen in her new red gown. The Queen wasn’t actually in the room; Victoria was elsewhere in the world, England to be precise, if she were still alive. Pearl didn’t know for sure because there hadn’t been any news on the island for quite some time.  It was 1893 and Victoria would live for eight more years.

Glancing up at the photograph above the piano, Pearl played her best, which was only average but inspired and that may be more important after all.

Having been born and spending her childhood in France, Pearl hadn’t had Victoria for a Queen for most of her young life. That changed when she found herself in a weird, alternative version of London for what seemed to be an eternity but was actually less than a year. Having learned she had to create a sense of home for herself wherever she was, she’d looked to the larger-than-life Monarch for a sense of normalcy in the nightmarish world she’d found herself in.

London seemed long ago and so far away now. There was no one around to wear the gown for; she’d finally put it on to play to the empty room in the tavern and to the portrait of the Queen.  She’d found the dress packed away in one of her trunks months before, and was looking forward to an opportunity to wear it–an opportunity which had yet to arise.

She continued to lose herself in the music and this let her forget for a while one of the real issues at hand; the ships had stopped coming to the harbor. Not only had there been no news of politics, the theater and of ladies fashion, which she was sure was all changing, but there had been no supplies delivered of late.

There was plenty of liquor in the tavern and she had a fair amount of wealth but the ships had simply ceased arriving. She’d taken careful stock of her food supply, the chutneys she’d made during the winter and the dry goods in the pantry. She’d found a shovel near the open crypt, the one with the coffin and strange altar, nervously borrowing it to turn over some soil to plant a small garden.  There were still tea and scones to be gotten at the Café Serenity and Hester never seemed concerned about anyone starving, although she hadn’t been forthcoming with any details, being as efficient and brisk as ever.

It was likely that all was well; still Pearl could not help but wonder. There were signs that others had been about the island although she rarely saw them.

She sighed and got up from the piano to pour herself another brandy and then raised her snifter in a toast to the portrait of the Queen.

I stopped by the Serenity Falls sim to pay my apartment rent on Tuesday and enjoyed some role play. Thanks to Spatterdash for cleaning up the rp log and posting it to the Legacies website where I copy/pasted from.

Bill Fastway walks slowly in, sparing his injured foot. He is old looking, and has an ugly scar. “Afternoon all…” he says, in a scarcely friendly voice.

Pearl Grey turns to look with curiosity at the old man who’s just addressed them.

Lux Tharnaby does a double take. “Greetings sir. I mistook you for someone I know. I’m Dr. Lux Tharnaby.

“Naia turns to see who has entered. She gives the man a steady unblinking feline gaze. After several moments she says. “Afternoon sir. Who are you?”

Bill Fastway nods. “I see, a sawbones… good body of men, often making good bodies of men… hah.” he hawks, breathing badly for a bit, but does not spit onto the floor. “William Fastway, Missy, appointed by Mister Spats to look after his interest while he’s off on business….”

Naia lifts one eyebrow. “What business interest are you looking after? Are you a doctor also?”

Pearl Grey arches a brow, hesitates and then goes ahead and asks. “Oh, I didn’t know Dr Spatterdash had left the island. I noticed he’s moved out of the apartment next to mine.” She listens avidly for the man to answer Naia.

Lux Tharnaby beckons him over. “Sit and talk with us sir.”

Bill Fastway smiles cruelly, rubbing his chin where there is another deep scar… “Doctor, eh…. No, missy, not a doctor as such… though I do know how to break most of the bones in the body, and how to keep someone alive for *days* ….” Something in his tone suggests he does not mean healthy walks and nutritious foods. “Why, that’s awfully kind of you, sir, I think I shall …” He walks with a slow, measured tread, limping slightly.

Naia being a fussy feline she pulls her tail up and around her so if the man takes a seat he will not touch her tail ” Yes , do join us ” she adds though without a smile. Hearing his words she seems to lean closer to Dr Lux

Pearl Grey gathers her things a little closer to her and shifts away with just a slight frown.

Lux Tharnaby looks the man over, noticing his strained gait. “So Spatterdash hired you to look after his affairs eh? What might that entail then, Fastway, er, sir?”

Bill Fastway rests his tired old bones upon the stool, and raps his walking stick on the bar, marking the surface. “SHOP!” He bawls at the top of his lungs, though the two staff are already there, waiting to serve him. “Give me a shot, … I’ve had the beer here, it’s like making love in a canoe. FAST!” He barks… He turns to look at Doctor Tharnaby.. ” That would be what we call. .” He heals forward, his vile-smelling breath seeming to fill the area. ” Privilished information, squire… It’sh need to know… and you don’t..”

Pearl Grey looks at the man out of the corner of her eye. “I must say, I know Dr Spatterdash. He must have left in a hurry if it’s you that he…….” She stops and merely shakes her head.

Naia’s nose crinkles and she sneezes as her senses are assaulted by Bill’s vile breath. Making a face of displeasure as she leans closer to Dr Lux. she ask. ” Did Dr. Spatterdash leave you a letter to confirm he appointed you to take care of his business matters?”

Lux Tharnaby stares, brow furrowed. “What’s your name, sir?”

Bill Fastway swills the shot of gin around in his mouth, before spitting most of it back into the glass. “William Fastway, your honour..” He says, with a horrible grin.. his teeth are chiefly brown and yellow, and look like a neglected churchyard. “Appointed factotum of Mister Spatterdash, with general reshponsibility covering his affairsh ” he winks lewdly “whilsht he’sh away, burying hish dad.”

Pearl Grey leans forward and speaks to Lux. “Has anyone heard from the Doctor lately? I’d hate to think there’s been foul play and no one’s doing anything about it.” She looks suspiciously at the man next to her.

Lux Tharnaby looks to Naia as if waiting for her to flash a claw. He turns again to William Fastway with a scowl. “With no affidavit for you to show, and with no word about it from Spatterdash? I’ll wager the constables will want a look at you, Mister Fastway.”

Naia gives a soft low growl ” I know Dr. Spatterdash. I am sure he would have said something to one of us. Why would he appoint you. A virtual stranger. What do you do exactly?

Naia without waiting she continues. “Do you have access to his bank accounts?”

Pearl Grey frowns suspiciously and squints her eyes at the man, waiting for him to answer.

Bill Fastway roars with laughter at that the Stygian reek of his mouth transmitted along the bar. “They can look at me all they like, my shaushyfriend, there’sh nothing to be found here… ” He murmurs to Naia. .” I am *very* careful and *very* thorough, mishy, you shee…” He turns around to Pearl/ “Oh, he hash known me a *long* time… though he won’t have mentioned me… we go a *long* walk back, do I and Mister Spatterdash…a LONG walk back…” He turns around , laughing at the other lady’s comments. ” Ha! Ha! Ash hish factotum, it would be uselesh if I didn’t! Ha!” he takes another sip of the gin, which has been congealing quietly in the glass. “Aaah, yesh….. I have full control of hish money, hish property… everything … how could I run it if I did not?”

Lux Tharnaby looks at his watch. “I’m very late…and I must be off. ” Lux snarls. “I trust you will remain civil with the ladies, Fastway.” Lux glowers at him as he passes behind and out the door.

Naia waves goodbye to Dr. Lux

Pearl Grey waves to Lux. “We’ll be fine.” She turns to Fastway. “I’ll be asking Mrs Muircastle the first chance I get if she knows anything about why the good Doctor has gone.”

Naia shudders as she watches him take a sip of what was once gin. She quietly moves to the vacated seat of Dr. Lux. The stench of his mouth is overbearing. She think she should get a drink of gin, if for no other reason than to wash out the smell that seem to be stuck in her mouth. ” Marco. a shot of gin please. ” Then she turns to William ” Do you have quarters here William ?”

Bill Fastway laughs, and whacks his cane to the bar top, scratching it again, ” More of this weak pis– oh, exCUSE me, laydies.. This watered effluent you call gin.!” He turns to Pearl again. ” Oh, I can tell you that. He hash had to go back home, shudden like .. Hish dad had a big apoplexy , bad one … Probably not long before he’s pushing daisies…” He takes the gin, swirls it round his mouth, and spits it back into the glass again.. “Aaaah, fresh ash a mountain dew..” he belches slightly. “Ahh yesh, madam, I am well provided for indeed.. .The Shpatterdahsesh do like their little luxuriesh…” he laughs cruelly.

Pearl Grey shudders. “That may all be true, but we need to check anyway. Dr Spatterdash is an important part of this community. He’s never spoken to me of his father.” She frowns. “I hope that all will be in order as far as his accounts and business interests when he returns.” She has a doubtful look on her face.

Naia sips some gin and notices the stench from Bill doesn’t seem so bad. She pipes up ” OHI knew about Dr Spatterdash father. The thing is they didn’t get along . Not at all”

Pearl Grey nods. “Perhaps the illness will change things in that regard.” She looks at Fastway. “So, you really aren’t going to tell us what business you’re here to manage for him?”

Naia growls softly , ” The business of taking all of Dr. Spatterdash’s money .”

Bill Fastway chuckles harshly.. ” Oh, yesh, she wash one of hish… Shir Robert had her… ” he pauses, lewdly. ” At the Royal College of Mushic, I think … Called her hish Golden Joachim… They fell out, though… father and shon, becaushe of hish winching, drinking, and drugsh.. ” he puts his hand to his mouth in a parody of shock ” Oopsh, forget I shaid that…” He takes some more of the gin, then looks into Pearl’s eyes, his own weaving slightly. “Ha! I am running the boarding houshe for him, and enshuring hish apartment ish kept in the manner he likesh it..” he stops suddenly, and spins around to Naia. ” Shtrong wordsh, mishy, very shtrong indeed … stealing money from Doctor Shpatter ish like stealing water from the deshert … you’ve got to be quick to do it….. and I ain’t , shee? ” he leans towards her menacingly. ” I shaid .. I’m *very* thorough..”

Pearl Grey frowns. “You mean the Doctor’s father when you mention wenching, drinking and drugs? Dr Spatterdash has always behaved as a gentleman as far as I know.” She still looks skeptical.

Naia does not lean back as William leans forward. Holding her ground, she clicks long claws of her right hand upon the counter top. Her voice low and steady ” I too am very thorough. I would hate to hear that Dr. Spatterdash suffered because of you. ” Her gaze still upon Bill she answers Pearl ” Dr Spatterdash was always a gentleman but he did have a fondness for the ladies. I am sure his father did too.

Cristof de Brabant walks in and takes a seat at one of the tables. Glances over to the group at the bar…” Evening.” watches and just waits.

Pearl Grey gives a quick glance at the man who enters and then back to Fastway, with a frown on her face. “I just find it difficult to believe that he’d trust you.” She nods to Naia, indicating that she understood.

Bill Fastway chuckles swilling and spitting his gin again, breathing fumes and halitosis over pearl. “Well, it’sh ash she shaysh mishy.. Shir Robert hash a fine reputation…. theshe daysh … but the apple doeshn’t fall far from the tree, and Mister Spatterdash wash a quick shtudy… He losht hish heart ot a tart up in Shcotland, when a-shtuddyin’.. .got drunk, cut away at hish armsh and legsh… then couldn’t take the pain, and shtole opium from the hoshpital… or sho they shay… Why elshe would a ‘fine young mind'” he spits the words out, with a sneer. ” train ash a dog botherer, and never shtay more than a few monthsh in each plashe?” Eh?”

Naia turns to see who entered. Her eyes widen as her nostrils flare as she pick up the scent of Cristof. But he looks different ” Cristof? ” she asks hesitantly ” Is that you?”

Pearl Grey almost gags as Fastways breath washes over her. She fumbles in her reticule for a handkerchief with which she covers her nose and mouth, removing it only long enough to mutter. “Well, no matter. We care about his well-being now and I must say it makes me nervous that you are in charge of his affairs.” She replaces the hankie over her nose.

Naia shakes her head, thinking that the gin has her seeing things ” Cristof ? What are you doing dressed like a templar?”

Pearl Grey turns to see who Naia is addressing.

Cristof de Brabant face contorts in confusion as the man speaks.. He wasn’t very fluent in drunk, but did catch the something about legs cut off and arms.” … A man cut his arms and legs off…. Though be interesting to know how someone can cut both arms off..” blinks.” looks to Nadia and tilts head.” Ahhh, Oh oui, it’s me.. nice to see thee, been a long time, t’wasn’t sure if you survive London, but good to see thou did… Why not dress like a Templar?” a bit of amusement creeps over his usaully impassive face.*

Naia laughs “The question is why dress like one? That time is long gone.

Pearl Grey shakes her head in bewilderment at everything, still holding the hankie to block some of Fastway’s foul breath.

Naia feels the gin is making her sleepy. ” Your gin has made me sleepy ” she finishes with a giggles. Suddenly she remembers Bill. ” I think I best be going. I am sure when one is around Mr. Fastway it is best to be in complete control of ones senses ”

Cristof de Brabant: “I’m a bit archaic at times…. Sides I’m still around and I feel like it.” smirked. He made sure not to breath unless to talk, it limited the drunken smell. Umm guess the gin is doing its job? Fair thee well., again was good to see thee again.”

Pearl Grey nods. “Take care Naia.”

Naia stumbles towards the door. As she passes Cristof she reaches out as if to touch his hair. ” Nice hair… that you can keep ” then continues to weave towards the door. ” You take care Pearl.. beware of Jabberwockies… or jabberwalkies..or jabber babber. Most of all beware of Mr. Fastway

Bill Fastway lights up a horrible old dog-end form the noisome recesses of his hat and puffs contentedly – the tobacco producing an evil fug , and showering ash over the food. “Hah! Absholutely, you never know…” he turns as he speaks and takes in the sigh to the templar.. He then almost falls off his chair laughing ” My godsh, it’s St. George!” He crows, and looks at Naia ” Ay, she be the dragon, right enough… ” he looks over to Pearl, taking in the view of her bounteous cleavage. ” Sho, doesh tha’ make you the virgin shacrifiche, eh?” He guffaws, pumping more smoke out from his cigarette, the stale sweat reeking from his unwashed and rumpled clothes.

Cristof de Brabant kind of grimaces at the Saint George comment.” Umm not quite saintly and names Cristof, not George.” Blinked when man starts talking about the woman being a dragon’s virgin sacrifice, least that was what he thought he was saying.” Ummmmmm.” Shakes his head and settles back to listening.*

Pearl Grey backs away and pulls another hankie out of her reticule, folding it and placing it over her chest. “Oh do be quiet you drunken oaf, if you having nothing more of use to tell us about the doctor.” She turns to the man at the table. “Are you the owner of this place? We haven’t met. My name is Pearl Grey and I’ve been asked to interview the owner here for a piece in the Gazette. I admit I’ve not been a patron of this place. I only dropped in to speak with Dr Tharnaby who was here earlier.”

Bill Fastway stands , weaving slightly with the drink, and his injury, he whips the handkerchief from Pearl’s chest, sniffing it exaggeratedly, and murmurs into her ear something that only she would hear, The then moves slightly away, coughs horribly, cackles, and spits on the floor, then thumps off into the night.

The New Apartment on an Island With Lighting to Accommodate Vampires, Demons and Drow

August 23, 1892

I don’t wish to have the magical secrets revealed to me that accomplished the demolishing of the building in which I lived here in Serenity Falls and the rising up of a new one. Many of my belongings are in the cottage in TornOak but it was still quite a labor to supervise the group who assisted me in with the packing and subsequent unpacking. I must say that I’m pleased with the new place and it quite got my mind off the rumblings and rumors of ever-impending doom.

Even though the lack of light here has drawn the Vampires, I find that I must venture out at times. Indeed it’s the desiring of company that has led me to live part-time here instead of hiding away in my cottage. One such pale creature spoke with me the other evening and I firmly made it known that I recognized what she was and that I thought it vulgar and pathetic for one to not even carry on a stimulating conversation but simply size me up for what I might do for them or what they might do to me.

Later I went into the city proper for a meal in the tavern and in no time some familiar faces from the old, destroyed London ventured in, although as usual there was some sort of distress or agitation going on in their minds. At least one of them is still human; the others were obviously not. I felt quite social until the tentacled and winged ones arrived; then I became more reserved.

I survived the evening and slept rather well. Still alive and still human.
