This parcel in Hookton, on Sansara, was claimed just a little over four months ago; the art and lounge spaces have often been in vibrant change, always worthy of visiting, never being too much under construction.

The land has gone through several name changes too. First binary, then post binary, and maybe some others before the current “dream; everything is art“.

The studio, gallery and mainland lounge are owned by serra Qendra. Currently at the landing there is a group joiner for machinima screenings planned for next month: “Cinema “Sunday Screenings” from 18 Feb >>> 8-10 PM
(8:15 start) playing machinima about sl… “.

Also available is an info notecard on Concrete Poem # 1 Dragons Tears:

“My ‘concrete poems’ are surrealistic assemblages of found objects

(No.1) Dragons Tears: is about the act of crying

The viewer is invited to sit in the middle of the sculpture…to ‘complete its verb’
…to take time from our usual work and let ourselves feel loss
Dragons so hate to lose any of their jewels
some private crying helps wash that away.

The Lounge is currently displaying snapshots by serra taken at LEA last round, mostly of The Plant.

The levels can be navigated by stairs, climbing, teleporter and flying. I’ve enjoyed wandering around the installations which have been quite fascinating.

There is a meditation area, rides, and floating jellyfish; spring has arrived with chickens wandering around.

One of the previous winter scenes here was selected for the cover of the most recent edition of The Antidote, an inworld publication celebrating continuing creativity, activities and community in Second Life in the midst and in spite of very challenging and often discouraging times in the arts and in the world. (Copies of the two editions may be picked up by the Peace Pole at nearby Wanderlust Cafe and Art Park Extension in Quentin.)

Walking all the way down to the water, you’ll find the Hookton Rez Zone close by.

I was delighted to find a gacha for affordable sculptures called “shell-likes”.

I’ve admired how the spaces here have adapted to and worked well with the aesthetics of the frequent changes in the area, some of which have looked unappealing.

There has usually been laundry drying in the sea breeze. At this time it is up on the roof.

A birds eye view looking down at dream: everything is art.

One of the destinations I’ve enjoyed visiting during the last month is Whimberly. Most of those visits were during the last “under construction” phase. It looked to be an orderly process; subsequent visits showed some changes in select places and there were always pleasant places to sit.

There are two reasons I chose this location to blog about. I liked the photos I snapped; these aren’t processed except for cropping.

Also machinima is allowed, a permission that isn’t necessarily granted like photography in SL.

“Come and explore the spring themed location called ‘Whimberly’.
Enjoy your stay, take lots of pictures, meet friends an above all have fun!
And to all the amazing Vloggers out there: you are allowed to take videos! II would love to see your work ♥”

There are several buildings on the sim, including a bakery in a windmill.

Whimberly is Adult rated.

A friend and I rode our horses around the sim.

I can understand why flying isn’t allowed. Flying to snap pics is easier than manipulating the camera controls for me but there are plenty of great views.

It’s a beautiful destination. Even with the high traffic, my visits were always peaceful.

The Chair Conservatory, an exhibition on a sky platform in Sedge on the Atoll continent, has been used as a set for a music video.  The chair project grew out of a casual conversation about inventory, collections and creative expression being the right of everyone who so wished.

chairs_038

Simply, chairs from a couple of inventories were rezzed and settings were made to show them. It was amusing and fun to work on.

chairs_026

A Sitting Party had been planned for what turned out to be a difficult week in the U.S. after a harsh and draining season. Some of us carried on.

chairs_006

Avatars were encouraged to wear costumes and snap photos.

chairs_012

A project like this is something almost anyone can do, not requiring a lot of time and hours and hours of learning software.

chairs_022

Some people have lots of lamps. Some collect animals.

Auto return was turned off for a while and avatars rezzed favorite and/or silly chairs.

I made a 4:07 slideshow of the Sitting Party.

The Chair Conservatory is still open with sets changing from time to time. The public are welcome; photography and filming encouraged.

Including Machinima Permissions in Land Descriptions

break from working

I’m a courteous and responsible avatar who enjoys making machinima. When I am filming it looks like I’m standing around, either alone or with my subject. It isn’t like I’m driving a van through someone’s flower beds or tracking mud on the carpets or scaring their sheep into a stampede.

I still have a huge amount to learn and the electronics I use aren’t so great. One thing I’ve learned is that unlike virtual photography, unless land description specifies that machinima is welcomed, we’re expected to ask permission. We can film on the LEA sims but we can’t rez. (Having no rez rights isn’t a problem for me; I rarely use poses for photography or deal with details that many others work with.)

When I see that others have used a location, I can guess that it’s acceptable to film but I’m not sure. Many showcase sim owners create flickr groups and invite avatars to submit their photos. It would be great if they would include information about machinima as well. Of course the location is to be credited; I don’t recall seeing when it hasn’t been.

The thing is, when I’ve sent IMs and notecards asking permission I haven’t been getting responses at all. I’m not sure how other avatars deal with this. None of the well known machinimists know me and we don’t hang out and chat so I am pretty much on my own. (My creative efforts have inspired several avatars to go and make wonderful machinima because I have such a blast doing it.)

It takes hours and hours to even end up with a three minute film so we have to kind of love it to bother. I think I recall seeing a list somewhere of places where filming is welcome but so often those things are not up-to-date.

I am hoping that some of the showcase sim owners who aren’t able or available to respond to IMs and notecards will indicate about permissions in their land descriptions for us everyday avatars who quietly go about doing video capture and editing it for our own enjoyment as well as the amusement of a few friends.  I’m mostly thinking of these unique sims that are around for three or six months.

If this doesn’t make it more easier, I’m prepared to make more use of the LEA build locations. And at Art Farm Co-op, there will be a Fall Session 2 for six weeks where participating avatars can have rez rights as well as film which is something I very much appreciate.

Anyway, here is my last machinima. I don’t have words to describe how much fun it was making it.

There’s Work That Needs Doing

Most of the followers of my blog aren’t in Second Life. A few of them who actually read the posts, seemingly like the pictures and this post is for you. Any Second Life resident who happens to read this knows about machinima, and this points the way to my favorite one in the recent The Machinima Expo 2012. To be honest I’ve only looked at the short ones and that will work for this blog post. How has it come to ten minutes being to long to watch something? The one I’ve selected is less than four minutes long.

Machinima is cinematic production using real-time 3d computer graphics. Most of it seems to have to do with computer games, of which I know little about. This one is from Second Life, which really isn’t a game.

It’s called The Last Syllable of Recorded Time by Tutsy Navarathna. I don’t know how long these clips will be available but it’s well worth a look. This film looks and sounds amazing and I agree with the message. I like to watch it full screen.

I wish I could do this. (/me sighs.)
