Building of 100 Stories, Kowloon

There’s a collaborative building project happening in Kowloon. A 100 story building has been constructed, with a variety of avatar tenants who’ve each installed a room.

Magnum Yoshikawa, the sim owner and project manager has created this wonderful activity that’s enjoyable to visit, and also in which to participate.

There were a few changes since the building began about two weeks ago, and the space has filled quickly. The “floors” were purchased, and coordinates were given to stack one on top of the other. Available Li ran out, and the original 22 Li floors were updated to a 10 Li version.

An avatar can walk up all the stairs in the back, some of which have been personalized.

Flying is allowed, and one can be selective of which floors to further explore.

The textures inside can be changed, and with one click. reset.

There’s a good number of bars, lounges, and snack rooms. Some holiday season decor is included, and even a welcoming space for vampires. There are at least two corpses in the building last I checked.

The protocol was fairly easy, – purchase a floor, click on a sign to request admittance into the group, wait for the invite, and rez the floor on top of the last one. Many of the notices during the changes had English instructions, as well as Japanese; Google translate worked great.

Numbers have been placed on the side of the building at each 10 stories to help with getting bearings. There are 102 floors as of right now.

My floor is fairly close to the ground. I put some art pieces I’ve made, and then removed one to help with the overall primmage.

This build will come down sometime in mid-January, and then another will go up for those who couldn’t participate this time. More information can be found on the Kowloon blog, which has a post in English text, as well as Japanese.

The Mysterious Old Man in Kowloon [game/event]

A mysterious old man has been reported invading a room in Kowloon, and there’s a game event which opened December 2, in which you can attempt to repel the intruder. It doesn’t take long, isn’t too difficult, and you can win a cool prize.

The board near the landing has instructions in Japanese and English. You select a weapon. The “weak” weapon is free, and works fine but takes longer to repel the mysterious man. The medium weapon is 3$L, and the strong one  is 10L$. Select your weapon, wear it, and teleport to the  room.

I got out my camera and attempted to stay out of the way as my traveling companion prepared to battle the intruder. He used the free weapon, and the intruder kept arriving at a reasonable pace, through the window, fireplace or door. After a predetermined number of hits with the weapon, (stand within 1 meter from the intruder and right click), the prize is received, and you can exit through the door. Please bring your sense of humor with you.

The prize is a high quality, animesh micro robot. It has a dedicated HUD that allows for color change, and controls to open/close the canopy. It can be attached to a miniature avatar. It’s amusing to watch running around; the sounds are well-done too.

If you need a miniature avatar, there is a micro rabbitroid available for purchase for 30L$. (I was unable to locate the avatars via the SLurl provided in this blog post.)

Exploring Kowloon has always been enjoyable for me.

Kowloon

As shown in the photo above, July 23 is the 11th anniversary of Kowloon.

I had a pleasant wander all over the sim on Sunday, the 22nd and wore the HUD for the selfie event. (I am guessing it had begun.) When you click the board you receive a folder containing a HUD in English and in Japanese. The instructions are simple enough but I failed totally in finding the locations. I don’t regret my time exploring.

Whenever I spend time here, I can see that the sim has had attention; some things change. There are lots of shops, bars and restaurants. The residential areas are off limits and that can be confusing.

One apartment area has a Siamese Guard Cat meowing a warning. In other areas text appears in local, whispering that the area is private.

There are some teleports that appear to be public and I guess most of them are. A few that look like postal boxes lead to private residences.

At one point, I discovered I had been ejected into Kowloon jail, which is simply being dumped in the water near the sim edge. Fortunately I could teleport back into Kowloon and continue my exploration.

Kowloon is a wonderful place to explore and take photographs and there are items to shop for that aren’t found anywhere else. I got a couple of chairs from a gacha this last visit.

Happy Anniversary Kowloon! May you have many more.

No Cubbyhole at Shop 14 Gallery, Kowloon

Having opened mid-June in an informal manner, No Cubbyhole is currently exhibiting at Shop 14 Gallery in Kowloon. I was pleased to be invited to create three digital pieces, specifically for this location by the proprietor, RMarie Beedit. The 192 sq m shop, located in the maze of Kowloon businesses, also holds a Tiki bar and an electronics shop on the ground floor.

From the artist statement:  “The works represent 3 of an infinite number of facets for the interaction dynamics of those incarnated in service to the mutation of the collective consciousness rather than being here for the community or tribe. The tendency is for these individuals to be lost in the group, viewed as being useful in one niche, delegated to one cubbyhole or limited role, usually as gofer or scullery maid, and expected to silently endure the gross inefficiencies of said tribe or community.”

I don’t know the closing date of the exhibit. Art sales go directly to support the gallery space.

Kowloon, Three Wheel Kart Ride

Oh, the small pleasures in life. This is me, having just crossed the finish line in Kowloon’s Kart Ride. There were no other avatars in the immediate area and I drove really, really cautiously. The vehicle steering works very well; I received a kart to keep for having finished.

There are some objects on the track. Some appear to be for decor or interest; others seem to affect the vehicle if touched. I am truly surprised that I was successful on the first attempt. While being intrepid, I usually don’t do well at this sort of thing, not caring to waste time and energy.

The instructions are simple. Everything is straightforward, except for the track which isn’t overly lengthy.

Afterwards, I test drove my kart through Applewood on Route 10 and it does very well on mainland roads.

The textures are beautiful and the kart has a satisfying sound. The smaller version is included in the photo above.

If you’d like to participate, the starting line is near Kowloon Gate Reborn.

Spirit Lounge ~ Kowloon

Kowloon, RMarie Beedit, Spirit Lounge

Recently I revisited Spirit Lounge (Shop 14) in Kowloon after a remodel by the shop owner, RMarie Beedit. The tiki lounge is a great example of what one can do with 192 sq m; it’s also a great beginning point to wander Kowloon.

The landing point is in a narrow alley between two shops. Spirit Lounge has an electronics store connected to it, shown in the right of the above photo. The Kitty Shrine is available for purchase. The lounge can be accessed via the passageway with the blue light.

The lounge has two levels; the bar is on the ground floor.

Climbing the winding staircase, you’ll find carefully selected decor.

The two metallic looking symbols on the wall were created by the lounge owner.

The minimal environment is relaxing and soothing.

The care lavished on the lounge hasn’t extended to the electronics shop connected to it. It needs a good scrubbing and disinfecting.  (We do love our grunge.)

I wanted to purchase the old television set for a vignette installation and managed to do so by sitting in the chair and camming into the glass case, as experienced shoppers know.

Kowloon, RMarie Beedit, Second Life, virtual small business

shop14-kowloon_001

For small business Saturday I’ve selected to post about Shop 14 in Kowloon, which is creatively set up as a destination in its own right. The shop, owned by RMarie Beedit is an excellent showcase of doing a lot with a 192 sq m space. shop14-kowloon_003

More than half the shop is allocated to a restful space with a lovely meditation shrine.

shop14-kowloon_004Across the alley is another small shop where you can pick up an old barrel, spools and delicacies such as rat kabobs.  😀shop14-kowloon_005The remaining portion of the shop contains a receiving and unpacking area for a few products which are available for purchase.shop14-kowloon_006RMarie also has a MP store, Galerie Shotgun, which includes New Toulouse style items.shop14-kowloon_007

Here’s a shout out for small businesses in Second Life in the midst of reports of the decline of our world.
