Academy Tram, Brunel Hall, New Babbage, Steamlands

Brunel Hall_005Last week I made a thorough visit to Brunel Hall and Restaurant in New Babbage after getting notice days before of yet another renovation. I’d last blogged about this destination in January, which includes a link to it’s history. Brunel Hall_003What I recall of the notice was that the latest renovation restored the restaurant and hotel to a previous version built with more mesh items. There’s an Academy Tram that runs in front of Brunel Hall if you wish to explore the area.

When you walk into the building, just inside to your left is an information booth about buildings in New Babbage and the building code. From the notecard:

“New Babbage was built for builders, not roleplayers. Think fantastic engineering, not whimsy. This is not the place for manor houses, vampire castles, or sprawling garden estates.” More info is given.Brunel Hall_004The seasonal decorations were out and I managed my visit safely around that creature coming up through the floor. There’s a map shown in the left of the photo and to the right of that is the entry into the pool area. The blackboard has instructions for the self serve dining.

It was gratifying to see that all the hotel rooms are occupied! You can check out availability easily and to the right are more details about room rentals. There’s other information on the wall to the right as well. The calendar indicates that it’s October in the 1880’s. This destination doesn’t use bots to inflate their traffic and never has.     Brunel Hall_007There are areas for meetings and romantic dinners. There were avatars while I was snapping and it is spacious enough for privacy.
Brunel Hall_009
There are rooms off to the side of the main dining area. Some areas have seating for tinies. There’s a hookah, instructions over the bar and lovely details everywhere.Brunel Hall_011There are also areas for group dining. The main dining area has a wall with a group joiner, facebook page, visitor counter and other info. Storerooms both upstairs and down indicate they won’t be running out of libations any time soon.Brunel Hall_017The bar has been moved back to the lower level. There’s dancing and also poses for leaning on the bar or tending it. I wished I still had my Edwardian outfit on that I wore to New Toulouse and IIe Sainte Marie-les-Bains for the photos. (What I was wearing was a pilot camouflage uniform and hair I got at Geeks ‘N Nerds.)

There’s a Greedy table downstairs too. I’ve never been interested in playing but took note that it’s the first time I’ve seen instructions for the game posted on a wall. (It blends in well with the decor too.)  This place is outstanding in helping visitors feel welcome and navigate their way around.  Brunel Hall_019Here is a shot from the restaurant, looking down upon the bar. Brunel Hall_022This is the spa area which is in a separate room off the pool. There are free bathing costumes for both women and men available.

New Babbage during the winter is a wonderful place to explore and Brunel Hall and Restaurant is a vital part of New Babbage.

soa 17Today I’m continuing with my photos of the art on the Metropolis Metaversum grid from where I left off in part two a couple of weeks ago.

I remember seeing Daco Monday’s art in Second Life. This was one of my favorite places. Things move and you can walk into them, click on things and it’s very dynamic and pretty.

This is about the time I stumbled out of the gallery buildings with three to five floors of art and discovered the section with huge 3D installations. One of the first I explored was by Giovanna Cerise whose work I’ve appreciated in Second Life.

Of course a huge 3D piece of art that you can walk into can’t really be done total justice in snapshots.

I will have one more post of snapshots of some 3D installations as well as a few in the galleries that I was returned to after a bad crash.

You can visit Summer of Arts on the Metropolis Metaversum grid from now through November 14. You can create an account on the grid or hypergrid in from elsewhere in opensim.  The Summer of Arts event happens every three years, not every summer.

Snapshot_019Here are some final photos of Carnival of Mirrors. The installation above is one of my favorites.Snapshot_015There were thought provoking installations that made me more introspective and even less into photography and note carding info.Snapshot_016Looking into the past.Snapshot_017Looking into the future.Snapshot_018I was especially pleased to see the campgrounds fill up so fast. It’s a great way to have an immersive experience for the week, logging in and out by your tent.

The idea of pop-up galleries and places seems to work in this oh-so ephemeral virtual world. I do know the feeling of creating something and wanting it to stay for a while so more people can experience it. Photographs can help with documentation and memories but they’re way different than being there. Of course.Snapshot_021Thanks to everyone who put creativity, time and energy into Burn 2 2015. Snapshot_022

IIe Sainte Marie-les-Bains, RolePlay, vintage, virtual destinations

sm 1I’ve found a charming virtual destination and roleplay sim, IIe Sainte Marie-les-Bains. You can simply visit but the times I’ve been there several avatars have engaged me in light roleplay. The time is the early 1900’s and it’s requested that period clothing be worn.sm 2Free period clothing for both men and women are available in the welcome area. There’s an outfit, a straw hat and a bathing costume for each. I like the straw hat, the top is ok and I love the skirt. I haven’t tried the bathing costume yet.sm 4

From the notecard: “Everyone who seeks a retreat for relaxation is welcome to Ile Sainte Marie-les-Bains.The french Island and Thermal Spa is located at the Cote d’Azur, just at the Coast between the Cities of Toulon and Nice. Roman Ruins are found on the Island and it is suposed that they had a Thermal bath here as well. Spend some relaxing time at the mild climate of Southern France and meet the friendly people. Time is around 1900. Several Events are planed for the future….stay informed with this group.sm 5

From the land description: “Everyone who seeks a retreat for relaxation is welcome to Ile Sainte Marie-les-Bains. The Island & Thermal Spa is at the Cote d’Azur. Time is around 1900.Please wear time fitting attire. Historic, Art Nouveau, Jugendstil, RP, Edwardian, Vintage, Mademoiselle’s”sm 6There are several restaurants, a hotel, a Pharmacie, some shops in which to purchase period costumes and vintage posters and the Gallerie Intemporelle where you can purchase copies of masterpieces by Monet, Cezzanne and such. I’ve heard there will be residences available and I’m guessing the “artiste” living above the gallery is in a private residence. sm 7I enjoyed taking photos there and have some of these up in my current pop up gallery at Art Farm Co-op at LEA 28, with the accompanying information:

“These museum photographs were casually taken by Pearl Grey on her first visit to the French Island at the Cote d’Azur on the Coast between the cities of Toulon and Nice in the early 1900’s.

Grey was accompanied by her friend RMarie Beedit. The purpose of the journey was intended to be a restorative rest in the thermal spa after months of overwork in artistic endeavors following the months of accompanying their respective husbands on African safari.

The notes in the beginning pages of Grey’s travel account mention the Roman Ruins in the area which were apparently explored by her. Photos of the ruins are extensively damaged by what appears to be chocolate.

Whatever the intended purpose of the first visit, the focus seems to have been on the local restaurants and on the fashions observed by the two women who were apparently quite free with their opinions and indulgences.

A restorative rest may have been intended but the ladies seemed to continue with their habit of living life with gusto.

This exhibit is curated by the great grand daughter of Grey, Pearl Grey.

This building the pieces are exhibited in is a historic relic itself and appears to be in a state of disrepair although the curator, Pearl Grey is quite adamant that the building is perfect for her vision.”sm 10This is seating in the baths; the pool is behind us.

Here are a few photos that are less processed:Gallerie IntemporelleGallerie IntemporelleHotel Belvedere 2Hotel Belvedere The building is by Silex Zapedzki of Never Totally Dead.

I’m looking forward to seeing photos taken in this location.

Burn 2 1Burn 2 Carnival of Mirrors continues through the 25th. The photo above shows one of the many places to hang out and tell stories or whatever.Burn 2 15There’s a schedule of live music and other events. Burn 2 3There’s quite a variety of things to see. Many of the installations have land descriptions such as the one for the space above that has a lot of watery mirrors and fire:

10_22_1The above photo shows a resting and snack place near the welcome entry. There are greeters and helpful people around if you have any questions.10_22_2I’ve met many Firefly fans in both Second Life and Opensim. The photo above is a Firefly Companions Guild.10_22_3Clicking on one of the framed photos connects you with a companion that will pour you some tea or some such.10_22_8But I was more in a mood for playing with the parachutes. 10_22_9The snapshot above was taken inside A Clam built for Organica by Jedda Zenovka. I happened to be there at the same time she was and she told me a bit about Organica, a psy music community, which sounds like a place worth checking out when I have more time. She mentioned discussions about sustainable living and the environment. I popped in to make sure the LM is accurate and found this in the land description:

Psytrance Sim

Freak Show by Jennifer Steele_001Continuing my exploration of Burn 2, I intended to pay closer attention to the juried artist installations and I began with Freak Show by Jennifer Steele. Freak Show by Jennifer Steele_002From the NC: “About the Artist: Jennifer Steele (Steele Wilder) Burn2 Artist and Videographer of Burn2 – Carnival of Mirrors

My work is FREAK SHOW

“Exploring the righteous freaks that we were and have become”

This installation involves info and insights from real life people whom some consider to be freaks. You can click on the ticket to choose the ones you are most interested in.Freak Show by Jennifer Steele_003This is how I often intend to write clear and informative posts. I sat backstage to begin working. Perhaps other bloggers have alts when they explore things; I don’t know. I don’t really network with other bloggers. Burn 2 is a very friendly place and avatars kept chatting with me. No, I didn’t put my busy sign on but I tried my press pass tag for a short time.Freak Show by Jennifer Steele_004I soon gave up. I collected some masks and things. Here I am wearing both a plague mask and a Viking hat which I rather liked the look of. I enjoyed the burger cooking animation outside the Freak Show tent. Thus I became a snapshot taking tourist once again.burn 2 5“Beyond the Mask Blu Vavoom

“Who Are You?” said Wonderland’s Caterpillar. In Real Life, we wear masks over the True Self only each of us knows. In SL, we wear Avatar(s) as clone-masks of our RL Selves or as a Fantasy-Self. Mask upon mask, layer upon layer. Who, really, Are You?”burn 2 7I got some quality exploration in at Beyond the Mask. This might be where I picked up the accessories I wore.burn 2 11“Mischief at work, mischief at play. Experience both here. A place to cuddle or chill, indoors or out. Mistryl’s Mischief.”burn 2 11“The Mirror of Truth. What will your true figure … be? You sit down on a chair, and please see a true figure projected by a mirror.”

This is what I got for images of my ‘true self’.

There are many interactive and clickable things at Carnival of Mirrors. Lots of details to explore for those who have time.

Veyot's Tree of Mirrors

Veyot’s Tree of Mirrors

I’ve been popping into Burn 2 when I can and have some more photos today. There’s a campground people could pitch a tent or sleeping bag in for the week; that must be a great immersive and efficient experience.11_16_15_028I’ve had other commitments this week and will surely miss a lot but I’m enjoying the time I’m spending there. Since dealing with mazes is unpleasant for me, I’ve been exploring the mirror and mask places more.11_16_15_027Some are thought-provoking installations, some fun and entertaining.11_16_15_021I asked someone involved about the “juried and invited artists” thing and apparently that happens every year. Long time readers of this blog are aware I’m more about subjective, open ended experiences than reporterish facts. 11_16_15_020The week does seem to be whizzing by but there’s still time to explore. You can find the event calendar has info you need about what’s happening when you’re able to be there.11_16_15_01211_16_15_007

Burn 2, Carnival of Mirrors

11_16_15_005Burn 2 opens Saturday the 17th at 12:00 p.m. with the Lamplighter Procession. The event calendar is here. It looks both well-organized and fun, the most impressive Burn 2 I’ve seen yet. At the Welcome Home arrival area, just follow the signs. There’s a map, a station to pick up water and clothes and you’re on your way.11_16_15_008The balloon tours and other rides weren’t functional yet on Press Day but it looks well set up for ease of getting around. I saw at least one Art Tour bus stop while I was walking around. The tour schedule shown above is near the Department of Mutant Vehicles.11_16_15_013In previous years I simply wandered around enjoying myself and didn’t read anything about the celebration.  This year I read a notecard indicating that there are 16 juried and invited artists. There were SLurls given with each avatars name and I’ll be blogging a bit about that this week. I really liked the installations I checked out briefly.11_16_15_014The theme looks more cohesive to me this year and I saw many things I want to explore further.11_16_15_023I started out intending to take fairly good notes but there were some rides to try out, free gifts ( like Fear and Loathing gestures and a wearable snake ) and things to play with. 11_16_15_024As always, with anything I post about, the idea is for avatars to go visit and check things out for themselves. The photos are for a bit of recognition, memories and documentation.11_16_15_026The Festival of Masks in the Frog Pond area especially drew me in.11_16_15_029On Friday, there were some places where I could fly and some where I could not. I saw one area installed by a friend and will pay closer attention to the avatar names associated with the art during the week. 11_16_15_030This is an especially intriguing view for me, with the installation behind it showing in the background. 11_16_15_033The Carnival of Mirrors is available to visit for just about a week.

New Toulouse

nt 14From the land description for New Toulouse:   “Welcome to New Toulouse, a private estate community based on the American city of New Orleans, Louisiana, and its surrounding environs in the first 25 years of the twentieth century (1900-1925).”nt 1These are actually old photos I found in a journal belonging to my great grandmother Pearl Grey. Apparently she’d taken several trips to New Toulouse to visit a friend who owned a bar called Weeds. During one of her visits a hurricane struck shortly after. nt 2Now some have said that Pearl didn’t always have a great grip on reality but I like to think her journal is accurate. We found it in her Classic and Surreal Gallery and Museum which I wrote about on Monday.nt 3Apparently as the water continued to rise, (it was steadily raining), Pearl and her friend Marie drank absinthe and talked. They were joined by the town doctor, Doc Avalon.  nt 4After enough conversation and drink, the women got in a small boat and toured the town. nt 5

nt 6

nt 7nt 8nt 9nt 11nt 13I’m guessing that Great Grandmother Pearl left town before the clean up started.
